A cognitive process that tends to evoke a supposedly adaptive behavior in some situation deemed analogous to some formerly memorized one.
F. and P. LAVIGNE distinguish two fundamental steps in the semantic process:
1)to faithfully perceive and semantically recognize events in the environment and
2)to dynamically anticipate possible future events (2000, p. 5)
They explain how formerly stored associations between some frequent similar sequences of events prepare the recognition in new situations of also seemingly similar sequences, yet incomplete.
This focuses the attention on the probability that the current sequence should lead to similar (or possibly dissimilar) results. This anticipation will then generate some adaptive behavior (Ibid)
