“Progressive differentiation” (G. BATESON, 1973, p.42).

This concept is more or less equivalent to MARUYAMA's deviation — amplification processes model. It is also related to polymorphism in populations, as considered as a factor of evolution.

BATESON distinguishes:

“- a. symmetrical schismogenesis, where the mutually promoting actions of A and B are essentially similar, e.g. in case of competitions, rivalry and the like;

- b. complementary schismogenesis, where the mutually promoting actions are essentially dissimilar but mutually appropriate. e.g. in cases of dominance-submission, succouring-dependence, exhibitionism-spectatorship and the like“ (p.82).
