“… a system event for which another event that occurs to the same system or to its environment is necessary but not sufficient” (R.L. ACKOFF, 1972).

ACKOFF states: “Thus a response is an event of which the system itself is a coproducer”. He gives an example in order to distinguish a response from a simple reaction: “… a person's turning on a light when it gets dark is a response to darkness, but the light's going on when the switch is turned: a reaction” (Ibid).
