A system (exogenous) or subsystem (endogenous) that helps a system to recover from some disturbance dangerous for its survival.
This concept has been introduced by L. SKYTTNER, inspired by the survival conditions at sea (1992, p.6).
He gives as examples: lifeboats, dinghies, communication equipment, survival equipment, ship surgeon, radio-offficer.
A rescue (sub)system depends on the existence of reserves or resources, on a specific capacity to receive, decode and use information, through suited existing channels. It may be a part of the system, or possibly a separate system created to be able to rescue a member of “confederate” systems, when needed. An example of this last is the Red Cross.
