N. LUHMANN writes: “The difference between subject and object (thinking and being, knowledge and object) is nothing else but the distinction between self-reference and external reference”(1995, p. 8)

The autopoietic system connects itself with some external reference through structural coupling , i.e. “external ” becomes “reference” only when the system reacts to some feature in its environment and, in some way, internalizes the “external”.
