T. VAMOS et al. state that patterns have generally the character of a metaphor: “…sets of coherent data (that) are stored as learnt devices for survival” (1992, p.1609).

They add: “The pattern metaphor as an external view of knowledge representation, i.e. a self-reflective representation of the mental representation is a natural development (of the entire phylogenic evolution of living creatures)” (Ibid).

A very good example of metaphoric pattern is our grouping of stars that are generally without any relation whatsoever into “constellations”. These groupings have many practical uses, but their unity is a mere perceptive illusion, that is even different from culture to culture: Chinese constellations for example, are different from the Western ones.
