This seems to be a very general systemic process, from stellar systems to ecosystems and living systems, and social ones (social insects, enterprises, organizations and bureaucracies).
It could be related to LOTKA's “world engine” and, from another viewpoint to KAUFFMAN's “frozen cores”.
