“A metaphor that emphasises active learning and control rather that the passive adaptation that characterises the ”open system“ view (R.L. FLOOD and M.C. JACKSON, 1991, p.10).

These authors stresses the interest of this view for management and organisation theory. They compare the positive and negative aspects of the same:

“Useful

“- It promotes self-inquiry and self-criticism and therefore the possibility of dynamic goal-seeking based on learning
“- When there is a high degree of uncertainty it encourages creativity
When and why does it break down in practice:
“- It tends to forget that the purposes of the parts may not always be the same as the purposes of the whole
“- Adopting recommendations based on this metaphor would require most extant organisations to undergo significant changes that would threaten those that are favoured by the status quo; so they will be resisted
“- It neglects to recognise that organisations are socially constructed phenomena” (p.11)

As to this last point, it seems however that the neurocybernetic model could also help to reach a better understanding of social constructs.
