Characteristic of a system which possesses various equilibrium points and is able to switch suddenly from one of these to another.

Each of these equilibrium positions is a punctual attractor and the transitions between them are the different elementary catastrophes.

The system can generally switch back to former positions. Each equilibrium position is characterized by a different behavior of the system.
