A way to study the role of some part in a whole by removing that part and observe the result in the system as a whole.

This is a very general method that can be applied to any kind of system, whether biological, ecological, social or mechanical.

The minus-one effects are either specific and, or local; or on the contrary destructive.

Let us remember that battle that was lost for want of a horse-shoe.

In some cases, a very minor minus-one effect can act as atrigger and may have enormous consequences, particularly in ecosystems .
