According to L.von BERTALANFFY, the maintenance of a system “involves continuous change of the systems of next lower order (level): Of chemical compounds in the cell, of cells in multicellular organisms, of individuals in super-individual life units. It was said, in this sense … that every organic system is essentially a hierarchical order of processes standing in dynamic equilibrium …We may consider, therefore, organic forms as the expression of a pattern of processes of an ordered system of forces. This point of view can by called dynamic morphology” (1969, p.81).

Generally the system maintains itself “not because of the absence of degradative reactions but because the synthetic and degradative reactions are proceeding at equal rates” (Ibid).
