“The mere flapping of a butterfly's wings could spawn hurricanes after not too long a time and very far away”. This image was proposed in the 1960's by E. N. LORENZ, a meteorologist at the M.I.T.

While not utterly impossible, this should of course be taken as a portentous metaphor about chaotic behavior and high unpredictability of complex systems, due to their high sensibility to initial conditions.
