The property of any process or function whose increase or decrease follows a simple arithmetical rate, i.e. without any positive (i.e. accelerating) or negative (i.e. braking) feedback.
More simply, in a linear relationship “variables are increased or reduced by a constant quantity” (ROSEN, 1966, p.93).
Linear relations can be represented by a straight line in cartesian coordinates, which explains the use of this term.
