A language connecting a set X of basic elements or symbols and a set G of rules that organize them.
Formal languages eliminate imprecise statements and permit a rigorous organization of knowledge. They allow the construction of abstract systems applicable to the establishment of coherent models of concrete systems.
However, the selection of the elements or symbols and of the rules are still the responsability of the modeler.
