CONANT writes that each label: “…depends upon and carries information about the constellation of characteristics” and adds that: “To select the proper label the classificational hierarchy must be provided with log$_{2}$N bits of information, on the average, about the characteristics of the objects (less if the labels are not equally probable)” (Ibid.).
