The sum of the ordered part and the disordered part of the internal energy of a system.

This concept has been introduced by J.F. SCHOUTEN (1953, p.199-204). It can be considered as “a mesure of the a priori possible configurations of the parameters of the system under consideration” (p.202).

If we consider open systems, we are led to the intriguing query to find out if a mature system would still be able to better the ratio order/disorder once stabilized, and, if so, how, at what cost and with which results.
