In any socialized group , the subdivision into distinct subgroups for the carrying out of some specialized tasks .

The original idea was developed by Adam SMITH in his “Wealth of Nations” in relation to Economics (1776).

However it is now clear that division of labor is a very general societal property. It can be found in insects societies and even in slime molds (Dictyostelium discoideum) and in some bacterial colonies (Anabaena) (J. SHAPIRO, 1988)
