According to O. JOHANSEN BERTOGLIO (1985, p.144-45) any control system needs the following characteristics:
- a negative feedback
- a fixed point of reference within a limited vicinity, wherein the variable must be kept
- a repertory of states which allows it to give an efficient response to any normal and specific stimulus
This last point is thus stated by G. PASK: “The amount of control (measured as a variety) depends upon the amount of information the controller gleans from the environment” (1961, p.53). This is equivalent to ASHBY's Law of requisite variety.
