A computer made of many simple computational units, able to do massive parallel processing.
The appearance of the connection machines and the development of networks introduced in recent years new possibilities leading to distributed parallel processing and to “machine intelligence” in a more extended sense.
M. BODEN writes: “Connectionist computation is not the manipulation of formal symbols by programmed rules. It is a self-organizing process of equilibration, governed by differential equations (which deal with statistical probabilities) and comparable to energy exchange in physics” (1990,.p.124).
