“… the number of distinct structures in which various mutual couplings can arrange the system's elements” (R. FIVAZ, 1991, p.24).

According to FIVAZ: “… the evolution of the complex system can be seen as an indefinite sequence of transitions which activates structures and associated functions according to external opportunities” (Ibid).

Instead of “evolution”, it would possibly be better to speak of “progressive adaptation”.

From another viewpoint, as in H. SIMON Hora and Tempus parable, complexity also has a hierarchical dimension.
