It is possible to distinguish various layers of communication, from the most basal physical one to the societal one. (In a sense, possibly somewhat metaphoric, any communication layer is societal).

Each layer institutes a higher level of complexity. For instance, physical communication leads to integrated atoms and molecules; chemical communication to biochemical complex molecules. Those in turn permit the shaping of complex living systems and their internal coordination (endocrinal, nervous and perceptive). Eventually nervous and perceptive cooordination among individuals leads to social integration.

A layer of communication at a specific hierarchical level of complexity acquires meaning only through new specific constraints. (PATTEE's statistical closure — 1973, p.95-6).
