- “A catastrophic change in a system which becomes, initially at least, overexcited such that some of the parts overstep the constraints of systems rules” (T.F.H. ALLEN & T.B. STARR, 1982, p.263).
- “Overstep” is more likely to be overshoot.
ALLEN and STARR consider collapse as “characteristic of an overconnected system… which has so many connections between its parts that it is unstable and is wont to undergo uncontrolled change” (p.263-274).
This can be understood as the result of an excessive narrowing of the system's stability limits and thresholds, which enhances the probabilities of overshoot.
