The subdivision of a system into significant fragments.
As subsystems possess by themselves a structural and functional specific value, a system should not be arbitrarily “chunked”, as expressed by H. SIMON (1974).
K. KRIPPENDORFF gives an interesting example of information chunking in telephone numbers, where specific “prefixes” like 54, or 54.214 are given a specific meaning allowing for a significant geographic ordering of telephone numbers, wordly and within a given country (1986, p.11).
