A threshold zone of complex dynamics unstably balanced between determined order and chaos.
R. LEWIN, in his review of St. KAUFFMAN's book “The Origines of Order” explains: “This poised state… offers rich possibilities for computation in mathematical models. KAUFFMAN draws on these principles and develop rich images and cogent mathematical descriptions how they might operate within biological systems. Life, he suggests, exists on the edge of chaos” (1993, p.46).
Emergence of higher levels of organization seems possible in dynamical situations freed from rigid order of controlled stability where behavior may become “most flexible, complex and adaptable” (Ibid).
