The characteristic of unexpected, unpredicted or random events.

The idea of chance is not much more than a mental crutch, corresponding to our lack of understanding of the generally very complex causes of more or less random events. With the discovery — at least partial — of these complex causes through chaos theory, the basic nature of what we call chance has become at least somewhat clearer.
