The ability of a living system to perform all the critical subsystems processes needed for life.

This concept has been introduced by J.G. MILLER (1978, p.18). MILLER makes however a subtle distinction: Only mature systems are totipotencial; in their growth period, their reproducer is not yet operative.

MILLER (Ibid, p.302 for instance) seems however sometimes to use the concept with the meaning of totipotency (see above).
