The condition of a system whose constraints are reducing variety to the point of severely limiting its adaptive capacity.
K.DE GREENE writes: “… tightly connected networks may be more unstable in that the effects of fluctuations and perturbations in positive-feedback loops can spead explosively across the entire field”.
He adds: “Embodiment of rationalized technological efficiencies can destabilize the whole system. For example, computerized program trading seems to have increased the severity of the october 1987 international stockmarket crash” (1991 b, p. 72).
As shown by DE GREENE in his paper, rigidity and fragility in complex systems and networks, are closely related to excessive tightness.
