The psycho-sociological pressure exerted in an education or training process by the teacher on the learner.
According to P. BOURDIEU, symbolic violence tends toward the transmission of a worldview (Weltanschauung) proper to the educator as a member of a specific socio-cultural group . It corresponds to sets of values and norms , and also perceptions and feelings typical of such a group.
In most cases symbolic violence is implicit and even unconscious in the educator. It can however become overt and translate into more or less subtle discrimination or even declared ostracism against the individual that does not “conform” with the approved type or does not readily accept the rules established by the dominant group.
It is obviously a general and very basic feature in all societies and at all levels.
Snobism, ridiculization, exclusion from some circles, etc., are forms of symbolic violence.
It seems to be a mental form of the physical exclusion in social animals or insects based on pheromonal differences.
