The basic grid or ground on which a system can be constructed or self-organized.
The substrate must have some specific characteristics which makes it proper for the development of the system as for example be homogeneous or isochronous, or isometric, or isotropic.
A good model of a substrate is the squared grid on which CONWAY's Game of Life can be developed. There are also physical substrates, as in catalysis or crystallization reactions. Substrates can be illimited, but only in theory. Observe the difference with the rules of chess, in which the movement rules of the various chessmen makes the chessboard different for each kind.
