R. ROSEN states: “The entire process… beginning with the isolation of atomic subsystems, their recombination to generate a large class of systems, and the rules for selection a subclass of system of interest out of these, are implicit in the notion of 'structuralism' or structural analysis for the study of complex systems. We have amply seen that the word 'structure' has to be interpreted in a very wide sense; indeed in biology the relevant 'structures' are always defined in functional terms” (1972, p. 63).
This is not only true in biology: any functional process that can be observed corresponds to a structure and, furthermore many observed structures are only the visible appearence of a long or very long term ongoing process.
