Object type Methodology or model

A variable global population composed of patches shifting and fluctuating in time.

L. PITELKA et al., who use the concept in vegetal ecology , write that some “local extinctions can be balanced by colonizations ” (1997, p.469).

However an excessive fragmentation into very reduced populations widely separated may lead to total extinction or at least extinction of some varieties.

There are also metapopulations in animal species and even possibly in human trades and cultural traits.
